Position: Volunteer Pet Therapist

Reports To: Volunteer Coordinator

Job Description Summary

The Pet Therapy Volunteer is a member of the hospice team with a desire to support patients and families in the Hospice program through visits with their trained therapy dog.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  1. Provides companionship, support and appropriate education for patients
  2. Responding appropriately to patient/caregiver inquiries
  3. Educating patients/caregivers on the benefits of pet therapy
  4. Monitor and report patient pain
  5. Establish and maintain a strong and healthy relationship with patients and caregivers
  6. Work in collaboration with the hospice team
  7. Track and maintain patient information when required

Position Qualifications

  1. Trained/Certified through the appropriate pet therapy organizations
  2. All Pets must have proof of uptodate shots and have appropriate training
  3. Ability to communicate well with people of diverse background and ages
  4. Ability to solve complex problems efficiently
  5. Maintains open communication with other team members, reporting events or changes of concern to the Volunteer Coordinator or other team members
  6. Comfortable with death and the dying process
  7. Ability to respect confidentiality at all times
  8. Self-motivated, dependable and responsible
  9. Ability to work independently
  10. Ability to work in a changing environment
  11. Able to practice proper infection control
  12. Able to maintain appropriate personal and professional boundaries
  13. Comfortable with death and the dying process
  14. Must be 18 years of age

  • Medicare does require that volunteers interacting with patients, other volunteers or employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 HOWEVER, we are open to fully remote volunteers.
