Preferred qualifications

  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to learn and promote the mission and activities of Habitat for Humanity.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of materials, methods and the equipment involved in residential home repair.
  • Experience working with volunteers, positively motivating, training and supervising them.
  • Experience working as a member of a team.
  • Ability to manage ones time, and the time of others.
  • Must also be able to make decisions and solve problems independently and effectively.
  • Experience with planning, organizing, executing and communicating in a fast-paced, limited-resource environment.
  • Must possess a positive attitude, flexibility, integrity, and mature judgment.
  • Basic experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel.
  • Current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to drive large pickup or panel trucks or haul trailers (or willingness to learn).
Physical requirements
  • Ability to be on one’s feet for extended periods of time, often on rough and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform construction tasks such as framing, siding, carpentry, and other basic home repair projects to include ability to work on ladders and heights up to two stories.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions. (Sites are often not heated during winter and not air-conditioned during summer.)
Service site environment

Service sites are where many critical home repairs are needed, and often have uneven surfaces and broken flooring. Members will serve primarily outdoors during all types of weather, with limited interior access. Construction tools and vehicles will be provided, as available. Members will have an assigned cubicle and access to a computer to check service-related email and complete timesheets and reporting.

Description

Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads utilizes the power of volunteers to build affordable homes in our community and provide support in our ReStores. We serve all seven geographical entities that comprise South Hampton Roads: Chesapeake, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Together with the help of volunteers, we have built over 200 homes throughout the area.
