Position: Spiritual Support Volunteer

Reports To: Volunteer Coordinator

Job Description Summary

The spiritual support volunteer provides spiritual support to patients and their families

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  1. Provide spiritual support to patients and families in accordance with the IDT care plan
  2. Understand the limitations of the role of the spiritual support volunteer and refer to Chaplain as necessary
  3. Read from spiritual/religious texts with patients and families when requested, and in accordance with their spiritual beliefs and religious practices
  4. Pray with patient/family when requested, and in accordance with their spiritual beliefs and religious practices
  5. Provide supportive interventions to include emotional support, active listening and life review
  6. Provide other resources such as books, inspirational music, etc.
  7. Complete accurate, objective, timely documentation of volunteer activities
  8. Participates in relevant education activities to provide competent support to patients and caregivers and to promote professional growth.

Position Qualifications

  1. Ability to communicate well with people of diverse background and ages
  2. Applicable experience interacting with dying individuals and their families
  3. Comfortable with death and the dying process
  4. Able to respect confidentiality at all times
  5. Self-motivated, dependable and responsible
  6. Able to work independently
  7. Able to practice proper infection control
  8. Ability to maintain appropriate personal and professional boundaries
  9. Able to work in a changing environment
  10. Must be 18 years of age

Heritage OnCare provides Hospice care wherever the patient calls home - private residence, nursing home or assisted living community. In collaboration with a patient's physician & Hospice Medical Director, we focus on quality of life using Expert medical care, pain & symptoms management, and emotional & spiritual support.
