Working River is all about the industrial history of the Minneapolis waterfront! Join us at the Upper Saint Anthony Lock and Dam this spring for some in-person youth education volunteering opportunities. These opportunities are typically 4.5 hours, and start times vary depending on the school’s schedules. Activities will be completed on the lock wall, which is akin to being on the roof of a two story building with plenty of railings. Volunteers should dress for the weather (there’s minimal shelter on the wall!) and bring their own lunch.
There are 3 different stations volunteers can sign-up to support:
Binocular Walk Assistant
Assist students in using binoculars during a guided walk across the lock wall. Help keep the binoculars clean, dry and operational. This activity will give students an opportunity to capture the view from the top of the lock wall. Students will be able to observe the falls, remnants of the historic milling district, modern Minneapolis and any wildlife that may be present.
Assist students as they operate hand mills to grind small samples of wheat into flour. This activity is designed to help students understand how flour is produced from wheat and learn about unique milling methods used in different times and places.
Assist students as they operate a "Water Power" table top activity. This table top activity is designed to help students understand how power was harnessed from Saint Anthony Falls for operation of saw mills and flour mills. This is a water-free station, there is not actual water being used at the water power table.
