The Whittier Birthplace seeks volunteer tour guides for the 2024 season (May-October).

Tours are available by reservation only, so once a tour is requested by a visitor, the time will be sent out to the tour guides for availability. Tour guides will also be asked to assist with special events scheduled throughout the season.

Tour guides will be responsible for leading visitors through the 17th century historic house while sharing stories about John Greenleaf Whittier and the Whittier Family. Training and a manual will be provided. Guides will also assist with admission and gift shop sales. If interested, please email Kaleigh Paré Shaughnessy, Executive Director at kaleigh@whittierbirthplace.org.

About Whittier Birthplace

Location:

305 Whittier Road, Haverhill, MA 01830, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the Whittier Birthplace is to preserve the historic landscape, house, and other buildings as nearly as may be, in the same condition as when John Greenleaf Whittier lived on the farmstead and to provide public access to the property so that the legacy of Whittier’s literary and abolition works may be remembered.

Description

With the aim to share the legacy of John Greenleaf Whittier's work as an abolitionist and poet, the Whittier Birthplace offers seasonal guided tours of the c.1688 historic Whittier family home and year-round self-guided access to 68 acres of woods and farmland. Programming takes place year-round for all ages including: poetry readings, kite flying day, virtual lecture series, performances in the apple orchard, snowshoe tours, and more.
