We ask that each volunteer work 32 hours/week, however, this requirement is flexible with a minimum of 24 hours/week. (please do not let limitations in availability prevent you from considering this position; we can work with volunteers to fit their availability into our season.)

The Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1992 primarily for the preservation and restoration of bottomland hardwood forest. The Refuge is named after the Marais des Cygnes River which runs through the middle of the refuge and is the dominant natural feature of the region. The 7500 acres of the Refuge encompass a variety of habitats from bottomland hardwood forests dominated by oaks and hickory to scattered prairie areas. About 2500 acres of the Refuge is closed to visitation and provides a haven for wildlife including the many migratory birds that use the forests for food and shelter. During the summer, the woods are alive with the sounds of birds from the song of the prothonotary warbler to the drumming of the red-headed woodpecker and the loud noises of blue jays. The refuge is approximately 8 miles from Pleasanton, Kansas which has a grocery store and various shops for other immediate needs. The refuge is approximately 65 miles from Kansas City which is home to many attractions such as the Kansas City Zoo, The National WWI Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the American Jazz Museum, City Market, the Ernie Miller Nature Center, the Lakeside Nature Center, and many other recreational opportunities.

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
