University of the People (UoPeople), a non-profit dedicated to opening access to higher education is currently seeking Volunteer Instructors to teach remedial Education courses and an undergraduate orientation course. Your service as a Volunteer Instructor will support UoPeople’s global mission to offer affordable, quality, online, degree-granting educational programs to any qualified student. Instructors should plan for a weekly commitment of around 15 hours for the duration of the nine-week UoPeople term. The University will issue modest honorariums to Volunteer Instructors with $300 USD per course in appreciation for their generous contributions toward our mission.

Position Description:

UoPeople Volunteer Instructors must make a weekly commitment of about 15 hours to course-related activities, which consist of responding to student emails and messages, posting discussion questions, engaging with students, grading learning journals, and reviewing peer assessments. Each UoPeople course is nine weeks long and is taught fully online in the learning management system. Instructors must be able to teach online and understand the needs of a very diverse student population.

Candidates with higher qualification as bachelor’s degree are welcome to apply.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Devote approximately 15 hours per course per week.
  • Maintain an instructor presence in the course with frequent check-ins and responsiveness to students.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse student populations and an international administration.
  • Teach course subject matter to ensure every student can master learning outcomes.
  • Regularly check in with the Department Chair regarding any course issues.
  • Monitor course grades and finalize grades by deadlines.
  • Model sensitivity to a diverse student population, representing the full spectrum of cultural, political, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from accredited university.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 2.50 or equivalent.
  • Teaching experience in remedial English.
  • Online teaching experience is preferred.

Dedicated to opening access to higher education globally, UoPeople is designed to help qualified high school graduates overcome financial, geographic, political, and personal constraints keeping them from collegiate studies. UoPeople is staffed by thousands of volunteers, including its Founder and President, Shai Reshef, the distinguished members of its international boards of trustees and advisors, and its faculty. The President’s Council is chaired by John Sexton, NYU’s President Emeritus, and consists of two dozen other leaders from the world’s foremost institutions. More than 26,000 professionals have volunteered for leadership roles, serving as provost, as deans, as administrators, or as faculty.

UoPeople has collaborations with the University of Edinburgh, Effat University, Long Island University, McGill University and NYU. Each of these schools has used UoPeople to identify talented students to whom they have provided admission and generous financial aid. UoPeople not only provides its students with a quality degree but also provides them a way to demonstrate their talent and readiness for spots in the student bodies of the world’s leading universities. In addition, UoPeople has partnered with Harvard Business School Online to allow UoPeople students to participate in Harvard’s online courses. Upon graduation, 92% of those who receive degrees of any kind at UoPeople are employed, including at companies such as Amazon, Apple, Dell, Deloitte, IBM, Microsoft, and JP Morgan, and organizations such as the UN and the World Bank.

UoPeople is supported by the generosity of individuals and foundations, including the Gates, Hewlett, and Ford Foundations, Fondation Hoffmann, and others. The University has been covered by the New York Times, BBC, NPR, Times Higher Education, US News and World Report, and more. President Reshef’s TED Talk and Nas Daily interview about the University have 30 million views combined.

University of the People is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
