Did you know that Asheville City Schools has the fifth largest achievement gap in the country (the largest in the state)? 82% of White students in Grades 3 to 8 in Asheville City Schools read at grade-level proficiency, while only 22% of Black students read at that same level.
The Youth Literacy Program tutors work with children from low-income families who read, write, and spell below grade level. Tutors in this program complete an initial orientation and 16-20 hours of training, which includes some pre-course work and homework (short articles to read, short videos to watch). They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service training throughout their tutoring commitment.
Tutors in this program work with their students twice per week for 50 minutes each session. Youth Literacy tutors commit to working with their students for at least one school year. Literacy Together has identified two afterschool programs to work with their students: YTL (Youth Transformed for Life) in the North Asheville area (on Merrimon Avenue) and Christine W. Avery in the Montford area. Sessions will take place between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
This program features two YL students and their tutor.
