Hello Borderlands supporter, today we need your help more than ever. After operating for over 25 years without very many grants, we are in need of assistance to get our operations more fully funded. 95% of our work is supported by our members donations each week at neighborhood produce markets. Very little of our work is supported through traditional grants and foundations, which means we have many opportunities available to us. Now we just need your help finding them!

This is where you come in. We are looking for a strong researcher to help us identify opportunities to apply for grants to fund our work in a more sustainable way. We have amazing ideas, and often we are limited at being able to execute all of them with the limited budget we have available to us. With changes in gas prices, and other life-events (the pandemic!) it has been difficult the last few years to continue to sustain all of our produce rescue efforts.

The ideal volunteer can commit to at least six months of continued volunteering because of the director's amount of training and development invested in the volunteer.

This volunteering role can have significant distant/virtual involvement. Volunteers with previous grant writing/ professional business writing are highly desired, along with familiarity with food insecurity and reducing food waste.

Volunteers will:

  • Maintain detailed understanding of organizational programs, fundraising strategies, partnerships, and goals to find potential grant opportunities;
  • Research new grant opportunities that align with organization mission, vision, and values;
  • Develop a spreadsheet to track opportunities;
  • Researches various types of grants available and the criteria to qualify for each;
  • Enter and monitor data to maintain list of new grant opportunities, constantly ensuring information is up-to-date;
  • Maintain a calendar of submissions, reporting deadlines, and records to track grant opportunities
Borderlands Produce Rescue works to reduce food waste and curb food insecurity. Each year we rescue between 20 million to 30 million pounds of fresh produce that would otherwise be dumped in Arizona landfills. Since beginning in 1994, we have rescued and distributed over 700 million pounds of fresh, nutritious produce. Each 100 lbs of produce we save from the landfill is 5lbs of bad methane gasses that would be harming our communities.

Our work has many intersectionalities; we hope you can help us identify opportunities to keep doing what we do.

About BORDERLANDS PRODUCE RESCUE

Location:

270 W. Produce Row, Nogales, AZ 85621, US

Mission Statement

We aim to eliminate food waste by redistributing fresh produce to families in need.

Description

Borderlands Produce Rescue has been in operation since 1994 working with produce distributors along the Nogales, Arizona and Mexico border. Often grocery stores and big-box retailers refuse to buy perfectly healthy produce, which is then routed instead to the landfill. Since the launch of Borderlands, we have worked with hundreds of produce distributors to instead take in all of the fresh fruits and veggies, both protecting our landfills from harmful waste, and ensuring the food is able to get into the hands of the community.

Through our many distribution programs we are able to distribute over 30 million pounds of fresh fruits and veggies every year. Our programs are very limited in traditional funding; we depend on a large contingent of volunteers each week to allow us to host many distribution markets throughout Arizona. With increased demand for help we are in need of volunteers to continue to grow our programs and rescue more produce.
