Be a part of a momentous chapter in Steep Theatre’s history by applying to join the board of this award-winning, community-based, ensemble-driven theatre company.
Founded in 2000, Steep Theatre is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization incorporated in the State of Illinois. Steep’s artistic ensemble of actors, directors, designers, writers, and other theatre artists shape the organization’s mission and its art. Steep’s board of directors is a group of 10-15 volunteers who support the work of the ensemble while assuring that Steep is acting in a way that is aligned with the company’s stated values and is ethically, financially, and legally sound. Board members come from a variety of backgrounds and join for a number of reasons, but many say the biggest reason is that they value the art Steep creates and the community it fosters, and they want to help it succeed. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, we hope you’ll consider joining us for the next chapter in Steep’s history as we renovate our recently purchased new home venue in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood.
Steep Theatre is interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of people as it works to build a diverse board that is committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and actively anti-racist theatre.

Description
Housed in what was once a small grocery store steps from the Berwyn El stop, Steep is the quintessential storefront theatre - that iconic breed of Chicago theatre that makes our cultural landscape unlike that of any other city. Steep is committed to producing new and under-produced plays that tell the stories of ordinary people in extraordinary situations - small stories that illuminate larger societal issues. Steep creates powerful productions of plays by today's most exciting writers and features the work of Chicago's hottest theatre artists in a beautiful, intimate space. Steep Theatre is known as a home for hard-hitting, finely tuned ensemble work.
Steep believes theatre should stoke conversations about the issues and conditions that are part of all of our lives; conversations that take place between artists and audiences in the theatre, in the lobby, and long after everyone has gone home. Steep's goal is more than just sparking these conversations - the company's goal is to add more voices and perspectives to these conversations. Steep strives to reach the everyday person who may have abandoned theatre as a relevant art form by telling stories that touch their lives in real and palpable ways and by creating an environment that is welcoming to everyone. By bringing these voices back to the theatre, Steep hopes to reinvigorate conversations and ensure that theatre is a viable, vital, and productive art form.
