Mission Statement
Established in 1971, Literacy for Adults in Brevard (LAB) is a 501 (c) (3), all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching literacy skills to the adult residents of Brevard County so that they may reach their full potential in their families, workplace, and community.
Description
When the original organization, Brevard Adult Literacy Volunteers was founded in Titiusville, Flroida, the focus was on teaching reading to the migrants who worked in the fields. The organization has had many distinct outeach efforts over the past 50 years but has remained true to the basic tenet: one-on-one tutoring in the public libraries across the county. After they're assessed, adult learners meet with their tutor once a week for a minimum of 60 - 90 minutes. All materials are provided at no cost.
Covid was difficult for us and we are now recovering from not being able to meet with students. Our county has a population of 615,000, of which 16% cannot read a simple sentence. Our students currently range in age from 20 - 80. They are both students who had an American education as well as individuals from all over the world. Adults have opportunities to attend group classes in English but some prefer and need to have the one-on-one opportunity.
