ORGANIZATION: Saavi Services for the Blind

Saavi Services for the Blind is in need of a Braille Room Assistant at our Phoenix campus!

Our volunteers provide us with the organizational capacity to continue working towards our vision: A world where blind individuals are equal contributors locally, nationally and throughout the world, demonstrating it is not what you can see; it is what you can do.

Saavi Services for the Blind is a vocational rehabilitation training center providing skills training in nonvisual techniques to people of all ages.

Whether a student is new to blindness or has received training in the past and would like to learn new skills, our goal is to provide skills training so our students may lead productive, independent lives. Our programs serve individuals of all ages, from children to seniors, all with the goal of providing confidence and skill-building opportunities through training and education.

How you’ll help us:

Saavi is in need of someone to assist our braille instructors in supporting our students. Braille literacy is a core component of our program that significantly affects employment outcomes. Our ideal volunteer can give 10 hours a week to:

  • Assist students with talking book library sign ups
  • Assist in mailing talking books
  • Organize learning materials in braille classroom
  • Assist with adapting popular board and card games
  • Assist with minor binding projects

Sometimes it is hard to believe in the effectiveness of nonvisual skills if you have never observed them in action. For this reason, we believe that role modeling is a key part of our training program. Thus, all employees and volunteers go through basic immersion training. This training allows staff to not only gain nonvisual skills but also to gain a deeper understanding of a positive philosophy of blindness.
