Hello Prospective Wildlife Rehab Volunteer!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Ohlone Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to help care for the many injured and orphaned critters we will take in during the 2022 season. If you are 18+ years of age and have an interest in helping our urban wildlife, you are invited to apply.

The animals at our Newark facility need consistent care throughout the 6-month busy season between April and October. We ask for your commitment to volunteer at least one 3-hour shift per week, for three weeks out of each month. Shifts are divided into two time slots: 9:00am-12:00pm and 12:00pm-3:00pm every day of the week including weekends.

Please talk to us about specific needs during orientation. We welcome animal lovers as well as college students who may only be available for the summer months. This opportunity is a wonderful introduction to wildlife rehabilitation and a valuable experience for anyone interested in pursuing work with animals. It is also highly rewarding for anyone who values wildlife!

Major responsibilities include preparing species-specific meals for the animals, cleaning enclosures, laundry, and dishes. A significant portion of time is spent cleaning our animal dwellings and the facility so we can maintain a high standard of healthcare.

You will also enjoy the comradery of our dedicated team doing good work for a good cause. Our goal is to provide a healthy, nurturing environment and optimal care for a variety of animals and return them to their native habitat. We welcome extra help in our beautiful outdoor garden, but that is optional.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • The ability to stand, lift, kneel, and bend over. This is a very physical volunteer position but and a rewarding one! You need the ability to stand, lift, kneel, and bend over.

  • Be vaccinated for COVID-19
