VLS is looking for volunteers to assist community members who are seeking legal advice in completing online applications for assistance. Often, community members do not have access to the internet or a computer to complete the online application.

Each Monday, VLS staff will assign calls to volunteers who will then call the applicant and assist them by completing the online application for them. We ask that call are made during the application period which occurs Monday-Wednesday. Each call generally lasts for 20-30 mins.

Volunteers are provided a brief training and a guide to help them in their role, including a guide to completing the application.

Mission Statement

Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization which exists to help low-income clients access the civil justice system by providing volunteer attorneys who donate free legal advice and representation, and by supporting and training those attorneys. Our clients include hard-working minimum wage earners with dependents and those on fixed incomes--people who could never afford legal assistance, even when their need is desperate. Our vision is that poverty not be a barrier to justice.

Description

Volunteer Legal Services was founded in 1981 by Austin attorneys concerned by inequity in the civil legal system. The high cost of legal services meant poor people could not get the help they needed, even for critical issues like divorce, child custody, consumer fraud and housing matters. First named "Austin Lawyers Care," our founders envisioned an organization that mobilized volunteer attorneys to give back to their community through donations of time and legal expertise.
