We're looking for math and reading tutors who can tutor in Fall 2022. The need has grown especially urgent since the pandemic!
Tutor Foundational Math or Reading Skills - and nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive.
No prior experience is necessary.
All you need is a caring heart and a desire to empower a child to learn! Tutors receive all the training, materials, and weekly coaching required to help a second- or third-grade girl or boy gain the confidence and academic skills required to be successful in elementary school, middle school, and beyond. Children Rising programs are structured so that it is easy for you to step in and be effective immediately while working in a team environment supported by Children Rising staff and fellow tutors. The reward of watching a student progress as they reach their potential is priceless.
The need is greater than ever!
Learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted children of color. As the achievement gap widens, elementary school students most impacted by poverty and educational inequity risk falling further behind, growing frustrated, and ultimately failing or dropping out of school.
The child you will tutor is smart and eager to learn, and will absolutely thrive with the individual attention you provide. Our materials are specifically designed to make it easy and fun to guide a child as they discover their ability to understand words, read books, or learn foundational math skills. Be prepared to witness many "aha" moments and smiles as a child’s confidence grows.

Description
Children Rising is an Oakland education non-profit founded in 2001. Our Community Engagement Model is poised to make a generational impact in our city. We are educating and energizing the broader community; recruiting, training, and supporting an array of highly skilled and experienced tutors and mentors; developing key strategic partnerships with schools and community partners; and empowering thousands of vulnerable children and youth to rise above the challenges they face. Our vision is for every struggling child to be reached by a caring member of the community at a critical time in their life to nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive. We empower children and youth attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs; and by galvanizing and guiding volunteers to teach, mentor, and nourish the children so they may develop academic and life skills to realize their God-given potential.

- Our students look forward to seeing their tutors each week! Commit 1-2 hours per week online or in the schools. Tutoring occurs Monday-Friday between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Evening tutoring opportunities are available on a limited basis.
- The Oakland Unified School District requires live scan background checks for all volunteers working with their students, whether online or in person. In-person tutors are also required to submit proof of negative TB status and COVID-19 vaccination.
