Becoming a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) pilot can be rewarding and fulfilling, as a CAP pilot you are given the opportunity to fly aircraft that are part of the world’s largest fleet of Cessna aircraft.
Do you have a desire to volunteer and serve your community a few days/evenings throughout the month?
As a pilot, you’ll come into the organization as a VFR pilot but depending on experience you can quickly move from VFR pilot to transportation pilot to mission pilot. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with, and fly. cadets as an orientation pilot if that’s what you enjoy. Some of these terms may be new to you but the information below, should prove helpful.
Although getting checked out in a CAP aircraft can seem difficult at times, it really isn’t that difficult when you look at what you can do for yourself, your community, and the nation. To help you through, the unit should provide a mentor to help you through the process. If you ever have questions don’t hesitate to ask your unit leadership, they’re in the position of leadership because they value CAP’s mission and all its members.
Please take a moment to review our Pilot Onboarding Pamphlet:
Other Qualifications: Strong organizational skills. People, and communication skills. Must be 18 or older to join as a senior member. Willingness to become a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Ability to pass a background check after submitting fingerprint cards and enthusiasm for community service.
CAP offers ordinary citizens stimulating training opportunities few experience outside the military.
While the central focal point of our effort is training and preparation of aircrew for the Alabama Wing fleet, there are many roles available to non-flying members such as radio communications, logistics, planning, mission staff participation and other aircrew positions such as Airborne Photographer or Mission Observer.
Redstone Composite Squadron meets each Monday 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We invite and welcome you to be our guest for an evening at one of our weekly squadron meetings in person. You'll get a chance to meet some of our members who will discuss the organization and provide you with informational pamphlets and accompany you for the evening to answer any questions you might have about the Civil Air Patrol.

Mission/Vision Statement Volunteers Serving America’s Communities, Saving Lives, and Shaping Futures Core Values Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence, and Respect.
Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year. CAP’s 56,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education resources. Members also serve as mentors to over 23,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
