Responsibilities: A Healthy Aging group leader is responsible for teaching the various Healthy Aging Program curriculum to community participants including the following: My Life, My Health-Chronic Disease Self-Management, Pain Self-Management, Diabetes Self-Management, Tai Chi for Arthritis, Healthy Eating, and A Matter of Balance.
- Prepare for sessions by reviewing the Leader Manual and materials
- Maintain fidelity to the program by adhering to the curriculum
- Encourage interactive discussion about the concepts and skills presented
- Encourage socializing, idea sharing, and problem-solving among the participants
Expectations:
- Attend group leader training
- Be open to travel and teaching possibilities throughout the Mystic Valley Elder Services service area
- Complete and submit required data and evaluations to the appropriate coordinator
- Facilitate information sessions
- Coordinate with co-leader to prepare for each session
- Promote Healthy Aging programs
Qualifications:
- Experience and/or interest in working with older adults
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable teaching and facilitating group discussion and role play
- Willingness to learn and support the principles and protocols of evidence-based programs
- Ability to carry (up to 10 lbs.) and operate audiovisual equipment (TV/VCR/DVD player)
- Demonstrates respect for diversity among group participants
- Maintains confidentiality with participants’ communications
- Must have reliable transportation
- Encourage and model positive health behaviors for participants.

Mystic Valley Elder Services (MVES) is a non-profit agency that provides essential home- and community-based care and resources such as assistance with personal care, household chores, meals, and transportation to more than 20,000 older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers living in 11 communities north of Boston. The communities include Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Melrose, North Reading, Reading, Revere, Stoneham, Wakefield and Winthrop.] The MVES Volunteer Program has the dual mission of engaging people in volunteer service to meet critical community needs while providing a high quality experience that will enrich their lives also.
Description
MVES is a nonprofit organization that since 1975 has acted as an entry point through which elders, families, caregivers, and health care professionals can access a wide variety of programs, services, and supports. MVES is one of the largest in a network of 25 similar aging services organizations in Massachusetts. MVES promotes safe, independence for elders and adults living with disabilities in eleven cities and towns north of Boston.
