Hop onboard the Pittsburgh Science Workshop's mobile program and bring science to life for all ages! Our modified school bus travels to different under-served communities in and around Pittsburgh, offering fascinating experiences for free. Like on the "Magic Schoolbus" kids and adults can explore everything from anatomy to physics as they see sound waves, make patterns with lasers, explore a bone collection, look at their hair and the fibers of their clothes under a microscope, and visit with live animals. Volunteers create a welcoming environment and support visitors in interacting meaningfully with the resources.

No science knowledge or expertise is required, but enthusiasm for science is appreciated :) Facilitators should have a friendly and positive attitude, and an adventurous and curious approach to life and learning. In our informal science education practice we aim to be "guides on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage". The program director will orient new volunteers and share background knowledge on the science resources. The ideal Science Bus facilitator will be available to help with multiple events per season, so that they can learn, gain experience, and apply that experience for the benefit of visitors.

About Pittsburgh Science Workshop

Location:

1901 Brighton Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower young people from underserved communities to grow academically, and expand their confidence, through hands-on science and creative ingenuity.

Description

A community science workshop (CSW) is like nowhere else in the world - it is filled with collected rocks and bones, homemade hovercrafts, spinning wobble-bots and live snakes and lungfish. It is a place where neighborhood families can visit for free to explore their own interests and ideas, build projects, learn new skills, and get curious about new science topics. It is a place of community and inspiration. In the workshop, children can learn important science concepts from their own physical, hands-on experiences!

The CSW program model has been growing and thriving for 28 years bringing hands-on, curiosity-driven science to underserved and marginalized communities from Fresno CA to upstate NY. We believe that through experiments, tinkering, and building, children can develop a genuine interest in learning and a positive relationship with the world around them. Help us to bring these benefits to Pittsburgh through our community space on the Northside our fantastic mobile science bus!
