ORGANIZATION: The San Diego River Park Foundation

Park Watch

The Community Outreach Intern connects people in San Diego and beyond to the region’s namesake waterway, the San Diego River. This person will attend public events as a representative of the San Diego River Park Foundation, promoting environmental awareness and stewardship.


  • Attend, set up, and staff outreach booths at community events throughout San Diego County.
  • Increase public awareness of the San Diego River and its importance to the people of San Diego.
  • Educate the public on the San Diego River Park Foundation’s mission, current projects, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Encourage environmental stewardship through personal actions and community service.
  • Represent the San Diego River Park Foundation in a positive and professional manner.
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries via email.
  • Recruit volunteers through online event postings, distributing flyers, emailing groups, and more.
  • Administer surveys to event attendees and distribute giveaways.
  • Process and analyze survey responses.
  • Prepare, pack, and unload supplies before and after events.
  • Track inventory of community outreach supplies.

Time Commitment: 5-12 hours/week: Hours vary depending on weekly outreach schedule.


  • Friendly, personable character with excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to converse with diverse audiences and ages.
  • Interest in environmental issues impacting the San Diego Region.
  • Passion for environmental stewardship and community involvement.
  • Flexible schedule with weekend and evening availability.
  • Strong written communication and critical thinking skills
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation that can be used to transport supplies to events.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.


  • Gain experience working in a well-established, successful environmental non-profit.
  • Improve communication skills by interacting with diverse audiences across San Diego County.
  • Learn about environmental stewardship projects related to the ecology of the San Diego River.
  • Opportunity to assist with other San Diego River projects as they become available.
  • Be a part of an amazing team of passionate staff and volunteers dedicated to the protection of the San Diego River.
  • Help make the San Diego region more environmentally aware and engaged!

Mission Statement

The San Diego River Park Foundation is dedicated to fostering stewardship and appreciation of the region’s namesake waterway. In order to protect and enhance the San Diego River as a place for recreation, habitat, and nature discovery, we are dedicated to engaging people to be stewards of the River and working towards the vision of a 52 mile, river-long system of parks, open spaces, and community places.


We organize many different volunteer stewardship activities each month. River Cleanups, native plant gardening, habitat restoration, volunteer leadership, water quality testing, outreach and education, special event committees, technical committees and more.
