COMPASS is a neighbourhood-based, web-accessible and mobile program serving residents of the District of Columbia for the purpose of decreasing poverty in our Nation’s Capital. With a focus on serving Ward 7 & 8 residents, Compass connects, supports, and works with individuals and/or families to reach self-identified goals. We are committed to the idea that members navigate their own journey, and that we are here to accompany them.
With the support of a math tutor, learners can reach their educational goals that in return have a long-lasting impact on their families and communities. Volunteer math tutors will aid in the Compass program mission to build long-lasting relationships in the community we serve and assist members with reaching set goals
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Encourage and support the adult learner by helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about learning
- Meet with the adult learner at least twice a week
- Be willing to have a conversation with the adult learner and Compass Partners to select materials and approaches that are suitable for the adult learner’s ability and needs
- Monthly planning session with Compass partner(s) and adult learner
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years or old
- Flexible schedule
- Must be dependable and prompt
- Be willing to maintain the confidentiality of the adult learner
- Have good listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills; have basic computer skills
- Have a college degree
- Have experience teaching

Volunteer Benefits:

Support:
- Compass Partner(s) will be available via phone or email if the volunteer needs support or assistance during scheduled tutoring days.
- Compass Partner(s) can accompany tutor on tutoring session days
- Compass Partner (s) will provide administrative support
Time Commitment:
- At least 2 hours a week; Monday-Friday
- Weekends are optional as it aligns with the client and tutor’s schedule
Location: Virtual or in-person as needed
Next Steps:
- By March 27: Fill out an application (earlier is better)
- March 8 - April 13: Matching Expectations conversation with Catholic Charities staff
- Week of April 20: Find out if you’ve been selected for the role.
- April 20 - May 17: Attend virtual Volunteer Orientation and complete screenings.
- Mid-May: Begin volunteering!
