Thrilling Thursdays (select Thursdays May-August)

Volunteers help visitors understand railroad history through engaging them in a variety of activities - telegraph & Morse code, Diesel Simulator, Turntable demos and more.

Help our young visitors discover a passion for railroad history!

Being a Thrilling Thursday volunteer is an engaging and rewarding experience. Our volunteers offer young visitors a rare hands-on look into the mechanical workings, historical objects, and unique history of these magnificent machines and the worlds they transformed. Watch someone's eyes light up as they have an "ah-ha!" moment making lasting cognitive connections between the 'facts' and the real lives affected by these events.

Each week, participants explore railroad-related activities with historic characters and friends from our partner organizations. This summer's theme focuses on Pullman Porter cars! Each station will explore a topic using a variety of museum resources, artifacts, and spaces that help connect our theme to visitors’ lives.

Never been a Stationed Interpreter before? That's ok! We offer the opportunity for new volunteers to shadow existing volunteers and also attend Tour Guide Training:
Training covers:

  • How to create a treasured experience versus just another ho-hum table demo
  • An overview of the museum’s themed tours and outlines
  • Museum Visitor types and how to work with them to make the most of their visit
  • Logistics and techniques that keep everyone safe and happy

Friendly and professional Stationed Interpreters provide our guests with an exceptional experience while visiting our facility. In this role, you will be responsible for engaging visitors as they explore the grounds and stop at "Ask Me" stations. At each station, we will be sharing interesting facts about the history of the Colorado Railroad Museum and answering any questions they may have about the artifacts on the table. You will also provide helpful tips on other attractions or restaurants in the area that are popular among tourists to help ensure our guests enjoy their stay.

Being a Stationed Interpreter is a truly rewarding experience. Learn new things, meet new people and make a difference for our organization and visitors.
