Want to help reduce landfill-bound waste? Rainier Valley Food Bank needs volunteers to help manage the proper sorting of our waste to reduce our environmental impact!
1-2 volunteers each distribution day will collect waste bins (trash, recycling, compost), sort into the proper dumpster. They will also unpackage unusable foods for composting. As time allows, waste reduction volunteers will also help break down cardboard, rinse containers for recycling, keep the grounds free of litter. There is also opportunity to do food rescue work by diverting food from our compost and connecting to neighbors with chickens or other livestock and bulk cooking foods "on the edge" (take home or to others, RVFB does not currently have appropriate kitchen facilities).
Qualifications:
comfortable working with waste. We will provide gloves (and apron if desired).
Can lift up to 30 lbs unassisted, 50lbs assisted.
Necessary motor skills to open packaging, sort waste, and place into dumpsters.
Attention to detail
No previous experience necessary. Training will be provided.
Shifts available Wednesday - Saturdays. Time flexible in 10am - 2pm range. Est 2 hour shifts.
