Want to make a difference, but not sure where to start? Are you passionate about education? At the New Mexico Holocaust Museum we strive to focus on historic and current acts of hate and injustice by using the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides to build communities of upstanders dedicated to social justice and human rights. We are looking for passionate volunteers to join our docent program to lead tours and educate school groups about our museum and the history we cover.

About NEW MEXICO HOLOCAUST MUSEUM AND GELLERT CENTER FOR EDUCATION

Location:

PO BOX 1762, ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87103, US

Mission Statement

When leaders, no matter what side they are on, engage in dangerous rhetoric, consequences ensue. Crimes against humanity occur. No longer are these hate crimes isolated incidents. They are becoming so mainstream that the very foundation of our democracy is crumbling by bits and pieces. As this takes hold, how can we claim to be the shining light of democracy? If we do not confront all the hate and intolerance swirling around us, what will we become? The New Mexico Holocaust Museum is dedicated to educating tomorrow’s upstanders so that everyone has equal opportunity for justice and the pursuit of happiness. Please support us in this effort

Description

Our museum is dedicated to developing communities of upstanders. In today’s world, no one can afford to be a bystander. Every day at NMHM, we share the lessons that history can teach us: that hatred and bigotry, left unchecked, will escalate, deepen, and spread; that silence in the face of hatred and bigotry is an endorsement of those ideas. Each of us has an obligation to help create the type of world we want to live in, to stand up and speak out in support of the ideals on which this country was founded, and to work to create a just society. Therefore, we cannot sit silently by when democracy is threatened, or our fellow citizens are discriminated against because of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. As Elie Wiesel said, "We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."

The New Mexico Holocaust Museum has excellent volunteer opportunities and many ways to help. Students have the chance to hone teamwork, customer service, and communication skills. Volunteers are needed to welcome visitors, answer phones, and work in small teams, for cataloging, repairs and janitorial work.
