Volunteer With Sutter Hospice Bereavement Program

ORGANIZATION: Sutter Care at Home - Hospice https://www.sutterhealth.org/scah

Bereavement Support Volunteers provide check-in phone calls and help our Bereavement team schedule counseling sessions with those that had a loved one on our hospice service. Also, bereavement volunteers deliver flower arrangements to the bereaved, help with office tasks and can help with our annual "Evening of Remembrance" event. We also have a new virtual reality goggle program that can be used with our bereaved clients (training provided). No bereavement or counseling experience is necessary; volunteers do 11 hours of self-paced online training prior to training with the bereavement coordinator, and will work with a trained bereavement counselor(s) and children's bereavement counselor who provides grief and loss support for children and teens, ages 5 - 18. Bereavement Volunteers must be empathetic, excellent listening skills and non-judgmental with respect to the beliefs and attitudes of clients. A 1 year commitment is required and the ability to volunteer 1-2 hours per week in our San Mateo office. This is an excellent opportunity for social work and psychology students.

Location:

1025 Atlantice Ave, Suite 100, Alameda, CA 94501, US

Mission Statement

Sutter Care at Home enhances the health and well being of the people in the communities we serve through a not-for-profit commitment to compassion and excellence in home-based services and products.

Description

To become a hospice volunteer at Sutter Care at Home the greatest gift you can offer is your time, your caring nature, and your willingness to listen. Training and ongoing support are provided to all volunteers, so experience is not required. It's a great opportunity to learn new skills and enhance existing ones. Volunteers are trained to enhance the overall goal of meeting the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical needs of hospice patients and their families.

Volunteers may stay with the patient to give the caregiver some time away or time to rest and they can be a caring companion and compassionate listener to both patients and families. While volunteers cannot provide clinical or personal care, they may be able to assist with routine tasks and errands.

Requirements: Volunteers receive 24 hours of training, health clearance and a background check, and attend monthly educational meetings. They must work closely with Volunteer Program Coordinator as members of the hospice team.
