Intern Position: Emergency Response Team Member

Mission Statement:
Eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Primary Function:
Provide emotional support and information to sexual and domestic assault, and human trafficking victim/survivors, and their family members/friends.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be currently enrolled in BA or MA related field
  2. Available to participate in on-call schedule
  3. Ability to respond within 60 minutes of a page
  4. Successfully complete all background checks
  5. Demonstrate patience and a non-judgmental attitude in relation to the survivor’s interests and attitudes
  6. Ability to remain calm and work under pressure
  7. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not required

Responsibilities:

  1. Respect the confidentiality of all client/agency information
  2. Respond to pages when YWCA receives calls reporting a domestic assault, sexual assault, or human trafficking from police and hospitals
  3. Provide support and advocacy to primary and secondary victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking
  4. Adhere to the policies and procedures of YWCA
  5. Listen with compassion to someone in crisis
  6. Demonstrate patience and a non-judgmental attitude in relation to the survivor’s interests and attitudes
  7. Listen with compassion to someone in crisis
  8. Complete 15-hour Emergency Response training provided by YWCA Kalamazoo

Training Requirements:

  1. Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE) and Emergency Response Team 15-hour training provided by YWCA in collaboration with other agencies
  2. Volunteer Orientation

Training Covers:

  1. Domestic assault laws and information on legal processes.
  2. Information on evidence collection/medical concerns.
  3. Power and control wheel and common reactions to assault.
  4. Issuers of diversity.
  5. Basic empathy skills.
  6. Roleplay
  7. Self-care for caregivers/support providers.
