Intern Position: Emergency Response Team Member
Department: Victim Services
Program: Emergency Response Sexual Assault Support

Hours: On-Call
Location: On-site or Local Hospital

Mission Statement:
Eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
Primary Function:
Provide emotional support and information to sexual and domestic assault, and human trafficking victim/survivors, and their family members/friends.
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in BA or MA related field
- Available to participate in on-call schedule
- Ability to respond within 60 minutes of a page
- Successfully complete all background checks
- Demonstrate patience and a non-judgmental attitude in relation to the survivor’s interests and attitudes
- Ability to remain calm and work under pressure
- Proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not required

Responsibilities:
- Respect the confidentiality of all client/agency information
- Respond to pages when YWCA receives calls reporting a domestic assault, sexual assault, or human trafficking from police and hospitals
- Provide support and advocacy to primary and secondary victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of YWCA
- Listen with compassion to someone in crisis
- Demonstrate patience and a non-judgmental attitude in relation to the survivor’s interests and attitudes
- Listen with compassion to someone in crisis
- Complete 15-hour Emergency Response training provided by YWCA Kalamazoo
Training Requirements:
- Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE) and Emergency Response Team 15-hour training provided by YWCA in collaboration with other agencies
- Volunteer Orientation
Training Covers:
- Domestic assault laws and information on legal processes.
- Information on evidence collection/medical concerns.
- Power and control wheel and common reactions to assault.
- Issuers of diversity.
- Basic empathy skills.
- Roleplay
- Self-care for caregivers/support providers.
