Purpose: Work alongside staff operating the volunteer program, which includes adult day health, AmeriCorps, and ElderFriends, with the goal of helping frail seniors and disabled adults maintain independence.
This is a great opportunity to develop your office skills and to gain some experience in a nonprofit. You will learn about volunteer recruitment, data keeping, and event planning. Work is repetitive over the span of a monthly cycle.
This is ideal for someone who enjoys working independently. We need help with record keeping, answering emails and phone calls. We need a volunteer who is able to jump right in after the initial orientation and take initiative without much coaching. Occasionally you will assist with assembling packets and doing errand running.
Internship duration: June 2016 through September 2016.
Supervision: Director of Volunteer Programs
Schedule: Intern and supervisor will select days and hours between Monday and Friday 9am to 4pm.
Hours: minimum of 15 hours per week.
Placement: Works in the volunteer department, supporting the ElderFriends volunteer companionship program to relieve loneliness and isolation among older adults in King County www.elderfriends.org. The intern will develop basic office skills as well as social service and volunteer management skills. Also assisting Ameri Corps team and Adult Day Health volunteer department.
Essential duties include:
- Screens potential volunteers by responding to applicants, phone screen, processing references; completing required background checks;
- Coordinates volunteer training by scheduling volunteers for training sessions, sending confirmations and reminders, handle set up and hospitality for sessions.
- Prepares volunteers for assignments by proposing friendly visiting matches; communicating expectations; sending assignment materials.
- Monitors volunteer performance by periodically contacting volunteers and elders for feedback; providing support and assistance over the phone and through email.
- Maintains program records by keeping files; data entry; recording statistics; documenting progress of friendly visiting matches.
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications include:
- Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers and older adults by phone and email
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Experience working with elders and disabled adults preferred
- Flexible, for occasional evening or weekend hours
