Mission Statement

We are a non-profit center in Hot Springs SD established to promote the arts by providing public education, professional development, and an artisan's marketplace which allows visitors to view, share and purchase work by local craftsmen and artisans. We have 501c3 status and welcome donations to help us reach our education and community outreach goals.

Description

Chautauqua Craftsmen & Artisans of the Black Hills, Inc. was formed as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization with 501c3 status in early 2016. The founders started with the missions of providing a venue for local and regional artists and craftsmen to exhibit and market their work; supporting professional development of craftsmen and artisans; and providing opportunities for education and participation in the arts and crafts to the community at large.

The BIG dream was to create a vibrant community of artisans and craftsmen who would assist in developing an enhanced awareness of and appreciation for the importance of the arts. They would sell their art and teach classes to locals and travelers; creating a year-round folk school environment that welcomed people of all ages, cultures and walks-of-life to enjoy learning new skills in a beautiful small-town atmosphere. Chautauqua would become a humming hub of art activity connecting the community with art, providing life-long learning and creating another reason for Hot Springs to be a destination for tourists, greatly needed to infuse our local economy. Most of this has been happening since 2016 in some small way.

Chautauqua seeks opportunities to bolster and support events happening in the community. We have sponsored music for the annual balloon festival, been a stop in the Wine, Walk and Putt event, held kid zone events for the Farmer’s Market and hosted high school student art shows.
