ABOUT BOARD SERVICE
- GROW WITH US IN FISCAL YEAR 2023
WMG seeks to build a team committed to social justice in the arts and whose energy will push forward the 30-year-old organization at the start of the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022.
WMG is in a growth moment, with new leadership in their second year. WMG is furthering new organizational strategy (including mission, vision, values, and branding evolution), strengthening programs to grow impact, audience reach and revenue, and stabilizing all operational systems for efficiency (including functions like financial systems and the business plan).
- CONNECT AND COLLABORATE
Our Board will have the great opportunity to connect and work with an empowering Board President, visionary staff, and on a Board team of 15. Board Members will offer deep knowledge and perspective from professional practices and/or lived experience, lend resources, and be able to collaboratively work towards building a community of artists and strong supporters.
- ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN AND NON-BINARY ARTISTS
At Woman Made Gallery, we champion the work of women and non-binary artists, including trans women and femme/feminine-identifying genderqueer artists. Board Members will be the strongest advocates for both the organization and the women and non-binary artists that we support, bringing enthusiasm and energy to encourage others to get involved and see the value of feminist art as we do.
- COMMIT TO ADVANCING RACIAL JUSTICE
Woman Made Gallery stands firmly in our commitment to racial justice. In 2021, WMG Board and staff participated in Advancing Racial Justice, a dynamic online learning series through Interactive Institute for Social Change. In FY22, we launched a Strategic Planning committee to collaboratively build upon this learning and center racial justice practices across the organization. We will continue to strengthen this core focus across the organization in FY23.
BOARD COMMITMENTS // HOW IT WILL WORK:
- Board Members commit to three-years of service (July 2022 - June 2025).
- Board Members will participate in one of five volunteer committees (Development, Executive and Finance, Membership and Marketing, Programming, Strategic Planning (Advancing Racial Justice)). *See descriptions below.
- Board Members commit to bimonthly meetings with the entire board and monthly meetings with their committee, with individual meetings with staff as requested.
- Board Members commit to staying informed on all things WMG through email communications directly from the Board President and Managing Director as well as general public communications.
- Board Members commit to attending each exhibition’s opening receptions and fundraising events, as COVID-19 conditions allow.
- Board Members commit to building relationships with members of our community today, and/or opening doors to new artists, community partners, and future supporters at large.
- Board Members commit to $450 give/get annual financial support. That is, Board members will give a personal contribution or get a financial contribution through employer matching gifts, fundraising efforts like securing donors, event sponsors, or in-kind donations, selling event tickets, or otherwise.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- WMG is in need of folks with skills in the following areas: art industry connectors, community organizing, feminist thinking, fundraising, event planning, small business operations, or nonprofit management. No extensive experience required, but each member must be able to show their connection to these skills in some way.
- In particular, WMG is in need of a Treasurer for the upcoming fiscal year. The ideal candidate will be CPA certified or have extensive financial management experience.
- Board Members must have passion and interest in learning about the visual or literary arts.

The ideal candidate will be CPA certified or have extensive financial management experience for nonprofit organizations. Primary duties include working with WMG's external bookkeeper and managing director on financial oversight, performing a financial analysis and presenting as a digestible report at bi-monthly board meetings and executive committee meetings, advises the Staff in financial management, including budgeting, end-of-year projections, and monitoring, present the annual budget to the board for approval, prepare and review the annual end of year statements, cash flow and end-of-year projections, and overall participate as a vital part of board leadership.
Development Committee: The ideal volunteers have fundraising experience and philanthropic connections. Primary duties include contributing to potential funder names list, developing fundraising event plans, grant writing, promoting and participating in various fund and friend-raising efforts, among others.
Executive Committee (Finance and Business Operations): The ideal volunteers have experience in small business operations, nonprofit management, financial planning or executive coaching. Primary duties include advising on the highest level of organizational matters from staff structure to board governance, serving as direct mentor to the Managing Director, working closely on budget creation, financial analysis and cashflow oversight.
Membership + Membership Committee: The ideal membership volunteers have art professional networks to connect with our 300+ member artists. Primary duties include relationship building with our members to understand needs, developing quarterly skills building workshop events, advising on additional exhibition opportunities for member artists, sourcing member artists, securing new benefits, among others. The ideal marketing volunteers have experience in marketing, social media, communications, public relations, or arts promotion otherwise. Primary duties include advising on effective, budget friendly marketing efforts to directly promote programs and events, building gallery reputation, developing overall brand strategy, among others.
Programming Committee: The ideal volunteers have art professional networks to build and design our annual programs calendar including exhibitions, literary arts and community dialogue programs. Primary duties include contributing to juror and community partner names list, pitching exhibition or programming event concepts, promoting calls for arts or sourcing artists otherwise.
Strategic Planning (Advancing Racial Justice): The ideal volunteers have a strong commitment to racial justice and activism. Building upon the organizations recent participation in Advancing Racial Justice through the Interactive Institute of Social Change, the primary duties include reviewing organizational practices through a racial justice lens, develop capacity building and educational tools to implement racial justice frameworks across the organization.
