In Ghana there is completely a maximization of the female deficiency as far as the hierarchy of authority is concerned. Women in Ghana are therefore generally timid. The economic strength of men makes them feel superior in our traditional set up, so any attempt by a woman to rise to the level to
play a replica of the masculine is classified as being contemptuous. Women have therefore long been put in a corner which makes them dependent on men. As a result, there is a huge disparity in educational and skills levels and its associated economic empowerment between boys and their girls’ counterpart. It is easy for a guy to be educated than a girl because female empowerment is contemptuous. It is viewed as an attempt to stampede men.
This mind-set has disenfranchised many women from acquiring employable skills. Traditional apprenticeship is by far the most effective institution in Ghana that is bridging the gap by giving opportunity to women to acquire employable skills through vocational skills training. Evidently, majority who are engaged in apprenticeship training are primarily women with junior high school or lower levels of education.
The Making Abolo Girls Great project is an innovative, detailed, specially tailored and accelerated apprenticeship module for unskilled young single mothers, petty traders, street hawkers, and the less privileged who live along the Volta lake in the Manya Krobo and Asuogyaman Municipalities into a FREE 12 months skills and entrepreneurship training in fashion design and cosmetology. This will contribute to the attainment of the sustainable development goals 1,2,5,8 and 10. Your time and efforts will help women in these communities to be economically empowered with decent and dignifying jobs to improve the quality of their lives.
