Mission Statement

We are a 501(C)(3) organization providing therapeutic and educational opportunities to children, adolescents, and adults with cognitive, mental, and behavioral challenges. This includes the at-risk community and military populations. Our volunteers are the driving force behind our organization. These are the people who dedicate their time and energy to help our clients achieve their goals. The opportunities are limitless! Let us know if you have a special skill. Volunteers come from all walks of life, some with donkey experience and some with no experience at all. No special expertise is required to volunteer with The Donkeys of the Heart -- just a passion to help make a difference in someone’s life and a willingness to learn. Description

What we do:

Equine Assisted Services With Donkeys

All sessions are conducted by Sophie Rainer certified by Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) as Equine Specialist Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL). We use ground-based activities to focus on emotional and mental health. A Mental Health Professional is on site for Equine (Donkey) Facilitated / Assisted Psychotherapy.

We help children, and adults, including the at-risk community, and military populations.

Equine (Donkey) Assisted Learning EAL

  • EAL is an experiential approach using donkeys as co-facilitators.
  • EAL provides opportunities to learn a variety of life skills and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem.

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) - Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP)

  • The team includes a licensed therapist, and an ESMHL (Equine Specialist Mental Health and Learning).
  • It promotes personal exploration and behaviors.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18
  • The volunteers who are willing to help with fundraising may need to give several hours to start. As most of the nonprofit raising funds is time consuming. I don't have the experience, nor the skills.
  • I need volunteers for marketing. Telling stories, writing posts. I would appreciate ideas. The donkey-therapy program is unique; I am the only person working solely with donkeys. I will be certified by PATH in June as mental health equine specialist.
