Seeking volunteers who speak Dari and/or Pashto languages
Wednesdays (in-person volunteering) from 12:30-2:30 and/or 3-4 hours a week within the 9am-5pm Monday-Friday schedule.
Program/Department Overview:
JVS’ Refugee Services has provided direct employment services to local refugee populations for over 40 years. These services are offered to refugees, political asylees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, certified victims of human trafficking, Afghan parolees, and other work-authorized immigrants. Services include job search assistance, resume and interview preparation, cultural orientation, pre-employment vocational English language classes, job placement and follow-up, and post-employment support. Over 80% of our participants are hired per year and our 90% job retention rate is higher than similar job placement agencies in Boston.
Responsibilities:
Assist JVS career coaches with spoken translation in Dari and/or Pashto when meeting with clients from Afghanistan, including individual and group orientations, intake meetings, job coaching meetings, and other discussions as needed. Meetings will be conducted over the phone, on Zoom, and/or in-person.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Ability to speak and understand an Afghan language (Dari or Pashto) at a high level.
- Comfortable using Zoom and able to assist adults learning basic Zoom functions.
- Respectful of client confidentiality and privacy.
- Ability to work as part of a team with staff and other volunteers/interns.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Flexibility; able to volunteer in-person and/or remotely based on need. Availability on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30pm EST in-person is strongly preferred.
