When Covid-19 first hit East Boston, MLCS quickly shifted to our communities needs, and started facilitating food and housing support systems. Every single Wednesday for the last 2 1/2 years, we've been running a food distribution program in partnership with Fair Foods, where we feed up to 300 families per week.

The food program has turned into an fun, innovative, community building experience, where neighbors, volunteers, youth, and staff come together to support one cause.

This volunteer opportunity consists of helping us sort, bag, and distribute fresh produce and dry goods to the Maverick Neighborhood - hosted right here at the MLCS community center. We typically start sorting around 11:30am, and distribution starts at 2pm. We recommend volunteers to wear something comfortable, and that you don't mind getting a bit dirty.

There is also occasional lifting (up to 40lbs), bending, twisting, and standing for long periods of time.

A break will be provided!

Please be vaccinated & masked up!

Mission Statement

Maverick Landing Community Services (MLCS) is a multi-service organization with a primary focus on helping children, youth, and adults to build 21st-century skills. Our mission is to enhance the lives of the culturally and economically diverse residents of Maverick Landing, East Boston, and surrounding communities by: Motivating people to achieve economic, educational, and personal goals Linking people to support systems Creating leadership opportunities Strengthening youth, families, and community

Description

MLCS is in the heart of a housing development where families live in subsidized units for over a decade on average. We watch babies become toddlers; toddlers become children; children become teens; and teens become adults. We have the opportunity to reach people at every turn. MLCS leverages this access by providing age-appropriate programming to help people break through learned barriers to build 21st century skills.

We Support:

  • School-aged children under 12: MLCS encourages smarter media and digital consumption in a staffed makerspace and tech lab. Through Maverick Makers, staff help children to develop a curiosity for learning with STEAM-based activities in a maker space for young learners.
  • Teens: MLCS employs a positive youth development and mentoring approach to build life skills and reengage youth in the possibilities of their future. Maverick Maker teens work and lead in the makerspace with kids and also work on product and program design and they are actively learning and using the design process with support from in-house designers and makers.
  • Adulthood: Supporting 21st century workforce development through a partnership with New Bostonians that makes possible English Innovations, a technology-infused English as a Second Language program as well as a partnership with Boston Career Connections a 21st century workforce development program.
