ORGANIZATION: MONTCLAIR EARLY MUSIC

Montclair Early Music is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in northern New Jersey in 2010. Our mission is to bringing history to life through music, and to provide opportunities for all people to play music in small ensembles. We produce a major holiday concert which is held in Montclair NJ and several other programs including outreach concerts during the year. The focus is on Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music.

Dance, art, history, folk traditions and songs of various cultures provide entertaining and educational programming. Our performances feature professional musicians, emerging musicians from colleges, and semi-professionals from the community. Our A Capella chorus, children and intermediate players also participate in the programs. A professional music director conducts the group.

MEM offers classes to adults and children to learn to play the Recorder. Many seniors have a bucket list which includes learning to play an instrument. The recorder is easy to learn and in a short time, students are playing in small groups and thoroughly enjoying the harmonies and the social connections.

Our Recorder Challenge for 3rd and 4th graders provides a fun way to learn to play the recorder following the Suzuki method. The program is free to children on the school lunch program. We believe all children should have an opportunity to learn to play music. Children have a fun challenge each week and at the culmination of the six weeks, they perform with adults in concert. Many continue to study and have performed at the Boston Early Music Festival.

We are seeking music lovers who are willing to put their time and expertise to work to help us fulfill our mission. MEM currently has four senior board directors, and we are seeking to grow the board to between seven and nine directors. We do not have salaried employees, so our board members have a hands-on attitude and take an active role in fundraising. We currently have a one hour monthly board meeting via zoom, with board members expected to attend 80% of the meetings. Our annual meeting is in July. We could use new directors with skills in finance/accounting, law, and media. We would be happy to meet with you on Zoom so you can get to know us and see what we do. Please contact us if you are ready to give your love of classical music a means to bring this historically significant art form to our communityEdit Describe your organization's mission Location & Contact Info

About MONTCLAIR EARLY MUSIC

Location:

153 Park Street, Montclair, NJ 07003, US

Mission Statement

We are musicians with a passion for Medieval and Renaissance music. We provide opportunities for people of all ages, races, and abilities to learn to play and perform music in small groups. We enrich our community with historic family-friendly programs of this rarely performed beautiful music integrating history, art, and music. Our mission extends to enhancing school programs by providing free and low-cost Recorder lessons to under-served children.

Description

We are primarily Recorder and String players with occasional addition of other period instruments and singers. Most people think the recorder is a toy for learning how to play "Hot Cross Buns", unaware that the recorder is an ancient instrument, in many sizes which match vocal ranges. There is so much music written for the recorders that it could hardly be played in a lifetime. We want to share the beauty of this music with others either to learn to play or to enjoy listening to. As an all volunteer organization, we are heavily dependent on volunteers to assist us in areas such as maintaining our music library, applying for grants, writing press releases, and editing videos.
