ORGANIZATION: Hui o Ko'olaupoko

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Kawainui, Hawaii's largest wetland, is threatened by overgrowth of invasive plants such as bullrush, cattail, water hyacinth and water lettuce. These plants crowd out areas of open water, reducing habitat for endangered wetland birds such as 'alae 'ula (Hawaiian Gallinule), 'alae ke'oke'o (Hawaiian Coot) and ae'o (Hawaiian Stilt).

Volunteers will assist with hand-pulling of invasive weeds and replanting areas with native wetland plants. The result will be a mosaic of mudflats, open water, restored native bird habitat, and native wetland plants on almost 20 wetland acres.

  • Closed toe shoes are required
  • Please wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting VERY wet & muddy
  • Bring a water bottle and sun/rain/bug protection, change of clothes
  • Restroom facilities are located in the main/upper park building
  • Participants under age 16 must have adult supervision.
  • Participants under the age of 18, attending without their parent or legal guardian must bring the signed waiver, all others will sign the waiver upon arrival.

We offer a variety of regularly scheduled events each month as well as weekday outings to join our field staff and we can work with groups to arrange a private weekday service trip or educational visit at no cost to the group. The best way see what events we have coming up and which would be the best fit for you is by visiting the Get Involved & Calendar pages on our website, contacting us at volunteer@huihawaii.org and signing up to receive our monthly newsletter.

Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any additional questions. We look forward to working with you!

Mission Statement

Protecting ocean health by restoring the aina: mauka to makai.

Description

The mission of Hui o Koolaupoko is to protect ocean health by restoring the aina: mauka to makai.

Throughout the Koolaupoko moku (Makapuu to Kualoa) in Windward Oahu, land-based pollution is a leading threat to ocean health and resources. Hui o Koolaupoko (HOK) addresses these problems by being a leader in community-based watershed management; working with communities to improve water quality through ecosystem restoration, implementing low-impact retrofits (LIR), reducing non-point source pollution and developing education, outreach and volunteer programs for all ages.

Along with HOK’s restoration work in Koolaupoko, the organization provides services including technical consultation, restoration design, trainings and watershed restoration capacity building throughout Oahu and the State of Hawaii.
