Service Description:

The Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) brings people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste and build caring communities by offering nourishment to hungry neighbors. Gleaning lies at the heart of SoSA’s work and mission. Gleaning is the act of collecting excess fresh foods from farms, gardens, farmers’ markets, and other sources in order to provide it to those in need. In this role, you will improve access to healthy food for those who are food insecure by organizing and supervising gleaning events, building volunteer capacity, engaging social media, assisting with fundraising efforts, and leading educational activities. We are looking for someone who is passionate about food access, agriculture and food waste, who is engaging and demonstrates compassion for others. This role will allow you the opportunity to grow as a leader, network with farmers, volunteers and hunger relief agencies, engage in non-profit fundraising and explore educational avenues within various communities.

The position also offers:

  • Camaraderie with several other VISTAs serving under the Indy Hunger Network umbrella
  • Team engagement activities, including bi-weekly meetings to discuss projects, socialize, and hear from guest presenters
  • Mentoring, one-on-one coaching, and professional development trainings
  • Assistance preparing for life after VISTA (resume review, interview prep, etc.)
  • Opportunities to work with leaders in the hunger relief space
  • Opportunities to work independently and lead on projects

This position is based in Indianapolis but the organization works across the state. The VISTA will serve in Marion County, as well as surrounding areas, which will require in-office and remote work with some travel. Mileage reimbursement for VISTA project travel will be provided by the organization. Indianapolis is easy to navigate, has a growing indie restaurant/craft beer/coffee scene, and lots of places to play and recreate!

Member Duties:

The Gleaning Coordinator VISTA will:

  • Organize and supervise gleaning events to increase healthy food access
  • Expand volunteer participation with outreach events and activities
  • Analyze and expand social media reach of SoSA
  • Explore funding streams by helping obtain grants and corporate sponsorships
  • Lead educational activities on food waste and gleaning in community settings

During your VISTA term, you will be one of several VISTA members serving under the umbrella of the Indy Hunger Network (IHN). IHN regards its VISTA members as a cohort moving through a transformational year-long experience. To help you maximize this experience, we employ a VISTA Coordinator to provide mentoring and professional development to the VISTA.

Mission Statement

The Society of St. Andrew brings people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste, and build caring communities by offering nourishment to hungry neighbors.

Description

Since January 2018, the Society of St. Andrew has operated a statewide, volunteer-driven Gleaning Network in Indiana that coordinates with local farmers, thousands of volunteers, and food providing agencies. Our Indiana Gleaning Network will multiply the amount of fresh produce we can provide to the hungry in the state each year. Please join us in this exciting hands-on activity.

Please contact us to indicate your interest in gleaning. When we have opportunities within 30-45 minutes of your location, we will email you with details and invite you to join us in the fields. Society of St. Andrew makes all arrangements with farmers, produce containers and food distribution. All that volunteer gleaners need to do is show up. Volunteer groups are encouraged to take food back to agencies or programs that they support in their local area.

People of all ages can glean. Gleaners should be able to bend over and should be able to bend and lift several pounds of produce. Most of our gleanings are in the morning and last two to three hours. Gleanings are scheduled week days and on Saturdays.
