ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org
Please visit the new page to apply.
Recruiting Organization: American Hiking Society
Join American Hiking Society for a week of building & maintaining trails in exciting locations across the country. Volunteer Vacations foster public land stewardship and provide volunteers the opportunity to give back to the trails they love, meet new people, and have a great time doing it! Crews consist of 6-15 volunteers accompanied by a crew leader. Volunteer Vacations involve backpacking or day hiking and accommodations vary from primitive campsites to bunkhouses or cabins. Tools and supervision are provided by the host agency or organization. Experience nature up close. Travel to new destinations. Meet other outdoor enthusiasts. Take a vacation that nourishes your body & your spirit. Get Out. Give Back.
Project Specifics: Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs-as high as 600 feet in some places-surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks, tours, a summer lecture series, whitewater rafting, kayaking, a pool for swimming and hot air ballooning.
The Letchworth Branch Trail of the Finger Lakes Trail System is a 27-mile-long pathway along the Genesee River as it passes through the Letchworth Gorge. This trail is heavily used by hikers, runners, and visitors to the area as it traverses several overlooks of the gorge and its three waterfalls. Much of the trail work will be drainage work, reroutes and elevating the trail in the most heavily used sections of the trail system. There may be some construction involving the replacement of two lean-to roofs. This process will entail the removal of roofing shingles, repairs to the wood structure of the roof and the installation of a metal roof.
Accommodations: Volunteers will stay at the Letchworth State Park Conference Center that has 8 beds among two lofts, a full kitchen and three showers. The conference center is a beautiful facility with a full porch to relax on and listen to the tumble of water as it flows over Middle Falls a stone's throw away. Volunteers should bring a sleeping bag or linens and pillow, towels, and personal gear. Please contact volunteer@americanhiking.org for assistance with gear needs.
Trip Cost: $350 per person
Volunteer Experience: While trips do not require prior trail maintenance experience, all of our projects require participants to be in good physical condition and will involve 30-40 hours of physical labor during the week.
