Phone Volunteer- Connect with an Older Adult in NY, NJ & CT

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Sunnyside Community Services

Interested in connecting with isolated, home-bound older adults? Friendly Visiting is right for you! Develop a lasting friendship with an older adult who is in deep need of companionship.

Bonus: No volunteer experience is necessary! All that is needed is a kind heart and the ability to continue making calls.

A little bit about our programs:

  • Friendly Visiting: Volunteers are matched with one homebound older adult who they visit once per week to provide companionship.*
  • Pet Pals: Volunteers are matched with one homebound older adult to provide companionship and pet care assistance. Pet Pals volunteers can: walk a dog, clean a cat's litter box, provide transportation to the veterinarian, etc.*
  • Senior Chat: Volunteers are matched with one homebound older adult who they call or video chat with once per week.
*In-person visiting temporarily on pause for COVID safety precautions. We look forward to resuming the in-person visits as soon as our agency determines it's safe for the clients and volunteers. Program Requirements:
  • All volunteers must:
    • Provide proof of vaccination status.
    • Live in the New York tri-state area (New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut) and be at least 18 years old.
    • Commit at least six months to participating in our program to build a meaningful relationship with their matched older adult.
    • Provide two references and consent to a background check (more information in the application).

Ordinarily, our Friendly Visiting volunteers usually visit seniors, but due to the pandemic, our volunteers are making friendly phone calls to seniors. You will be matched with one senior and call them every week.

With your phone buddy, you can:

  • Develop a friendship with a senior
  • Hear interesting stories
  • Video chat with Face Time or Zoom
  • Talk about favorite books & movies
  • Play games like chess online
  • Attend virtual workshops together

Please reach out to Lauren Wade or Jennie Thomas, to learn more about how you can change a senior's life!

Please note that all volunteers must be over 18 years old, live in New York City, New Jersey or Connecticut, and provide proof of vaccination.
