Teach Computer Classes to Adults
A volunteer assists with the library's mission to provide information and computer access to everyone in the community.

Combine your computer and communication skills to help library patrons use computers during scheduled computer labs.

Position Description

This is an opportunity to use your computer skills and problem solving savvy to help library users with anything from how to do basic computer functions, set up email accounts, fill out forms, update resumes, and locate information on the internet. This position monitors the computer lab, manages sign-ups for computers, works one-on-one with computer lab users in need of help, answers the lab phone and signs library users up for classes. Good customer service skills are a must. Intermediate computer skills preferred. Some training provided.

Schedule and Time Commitment

The time commitment is 2-3 hours/week for 3 months.

North Portland Library's computer lab, located at 512 N. Killingsworth St., is seeking volunteers for the following shifts:

  • Mondays 1:00 - 3:00 PM, 2:00 - 4:00 PM, or 3:00 - 5:00 PM
  • Tuesdays 1:00 - 3:00 PM, 2:00 - 4:00 PM or 3:00-5:00 PM
  • Wednesdays 1:00 - 3:30 PM
  • Fridays 1:00 - 3:30 PM


Skills and Experience Needed

We are looking for volunteers with the following:

  • Basic computer skills; e.g., using the keyboard and mouse, Web browsing, email and office product applications
  • Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot basic computer issues
  • Ability to work with adults with a variety of computer skills and abilities
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from diverse cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to be flexible, patient, friendly and responsible
  • Willing to ask for help when you don't know an answer
  • Age 16 or older

Multnomah County Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi River, with a history that reaches back to 1864. As Oregon's largest public library, Multnomah County Library serves nearly one-fifth of the state's population with a wide variety of programs and services.

The mission of the volunteer program is to engage community members in enhancing the services that Multnomah County Library is able to provide online, at library locations, and in the community. Volunteers are engaged throughout the organization including at all of our 19 libraries and our outreach programs.
