"Paws for Comfort" Pet Therapy; Owner & Pet needed to visit Hospice Patients
Encompass Hospice in Marshall County is looking for caring people with gentle and well behaved dogs who want to share the love of their pets in our "Paws for Comfort" program for hospice patients.
Experts concur that pets do extremely well therapeutically. Therapy dogs are "good medicine" for people’s stress and depression by increasing overall emotional wellbeing. A visit from a therapy dog can bring happiness & laughter if even for a short time, taking their minds off problems, pains, and worries. Pets can also be great at redirecting dementia and Alzheimer’s patients reducing behaviors, often rekindling warm memories of pets.
We will train the owner to be a hospice volunteer so both can visit patients together! We have patients who can benefit from visits from furry friends.
Dog requirements are listed below but are not limited to: (a full list can be obtained from Volunteer Coordinator)
- Certified by a Veterinarian to be medically fit including dental health and to have the appropriate temperament to remain calm
- Certification from an Obedience School
- Current with all required vaccinations
- At least 1 year old and Not in heat
- Dog must be bathed and well-groomed prior to making visits.
Handler Requirements
Volunteers are welcome to provide assistance during the day, after hours, or on weekends. Volunteer commitment is flexible to volunteer’s schedule.
We provide free training for all of our volunteers. Volunteers must complete the application and orientation processes, which include background screenings, a valid driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance and proof of COVID-19 vaccination. A 2-step TB skin test is required and will be provided by Encompass. Volunteers must have reliable transportation, must be dependable, and have the ability to complete written documentation.
Jr. volunteers ages 14-18 may volunteer as long as they are accompanied and supervised by an adult volunteer.
Please contact me if you think you would be interested in volunteering. I look forward to hearing from you today! Crissy H. Faulkner, BSW Volunteer Coordinator
