As part of FareStart’s work to expand food security, we are piloting a mobile market this summer. Our goal is to find new ways to provide equitable access to fresh, nutritious food to communities who are underserved including communities that have been impacted by systemic racism in our food systems. We are partnering with local organizations such as SIHB and KCHA, and the YMCA to address and solve issues of quality food access in these communities.
We plan to have fresh produce, and other staples available at no cost via the mobile market during the pilot phase. We will leverage high quality food that is gathered, gleaned, and purchased from our food partners including local farmers, grocers, retail stores and donors. The results of the pilot will help inform our longer-term strategic priorities around food security. While the market is in the pilot phase, our goal is to gain feedback from the community and evaluate preliminary input on the mobile market. Findings from this pilot phase will guide our next steps and help ensure our expansion is truly community-based and community-led.
