ORGANIZATION: Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego

Helping Hands for the House

Food is a simple pleasure, especially when you are a child recovering from a life-threatening illness or injury. Be part of the team that ensures good, wholesome food is unloaded from our fresh food rescue fleet, organized, and ready for our kitchen staff to create three meals a day for children and their families who are guests at the House. Although this is a behind the scenes activity, your efforts will not go unnoticed when our guests get nutritious and delicious meals so important to their recovery and resiliency. You also will have the chance to organize non-food in kind donations such as new toys, clothes, blankets, and other items a family unexpectedly needs during their stay at RMHCSD.

This is a fun way to spend time with a friend who also enjoys tidying up! Many shifts need two volunteers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Arrive on time each scheduled day.
  • Maintain an organized safe workspace.
  • Help drivers receive and record donations.
  • Take photos on our tablet of all food donations.
  • Assist drivers by moving donations from our vehicles to the unloading area.
  • Transport rescued food from the loading area to the silo (pantry) and other storage areas.
  • Organize and stock the silo (pantry) with incoming donations.
  • Reorganize food on the shelves placing earliest expiration date items in front.
  • Help staff clean-up receiving area and silo (pantry).
  • Work in tandem with other RMHCSD staff and volunteers.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to move freely and able to lift 50 lbs (accommodations made for those who cannot lift).
  • Reliable and dependable!
  • Outgoing, helpful, and flexible demeanor able to take direction.
  • Demonstrate friendly, helpful attitude when working with other volunteers and staff.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision, and as an integral team member.
  • Reports any operational problems immediately.
RMHCSD has been fortunate to receive a record number of in kind donations during the pandemic, and your help will ensure those donations are utilized and provided to the House guests.

About Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego

Location:

2929 Children's Way, San Diego, CA 92123, US

Mission Statement

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego provides a "home away from home" for families with children being treated for serious, often life-threatening conditions at local hospitals.

Description

At San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House, we know that children need their parents to be strong. We provide an essential "home away from home" where families may take care of their own basic needs while remaining just minutes from their child's hospital bedside. Research shows that when families stay close to their hospitalized child, the child heals faster and the family copes better. This year, we’ll house over 1,500 families, providing meals, computer access, laundry and exercise facilities, and much more, all in an environment where families may connect with others who understand what they’re going through. Depending on their child’s condition, families may stay at our House for days, weeks, or even months at a time.
