ORGANIZATION: SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

The Wizard's Wardrobe has a library of over 2,700 books. We have several specialized collections within the general collection. There are leveled books that students read to their tutors, chapter books for students in 3rd-5th grade, wordless books to encourage writing and a sizable Africa American/multicultural collection.

We are looking for a person who would like to help our librarian with shelving books and occasionally doing inventory. There may be other areas the librarian may ask the assistant to do.

In general, the assistant librarian comes in once a week to shelve the books used during the previous week. S/he is there about one to two hours.

About SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Location:

PO BOX 61, ALBANY, NY 12201, US

Mission Statement

Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, our one-on-one tutoring program enhances literacy, fosters creativity, and supplements classroom learning in the South End of Albany. Reading is essential *** One-on-one tutoring works *** Every child has worth

Description

After tutoring within a nearby elementary school for several years, a number of us decided to do more and started an after-school tutoring program located about a block east of the elementary school 3 1/2 years ago. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the only 13% of the children in the 3rd - 6th grade read on grade level.

Starting our program with 1st and 2nd graders, and remaining with them through their elementary years, it is the hope to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of third grade. This gives them a chance to be successful students when they reach middle school.

We work with the students to improve reading, writing and problem solving skills. The five components of reading are stressed - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We publish an anthology of the students' writing at the end of each year. And there is a STEM problem with no "right" answer to challenge their creativity each month.

We have had a two of our students moved into the elementary school's Young Scholars Program.

We are looking for tutors who will be committed to working with the same student for at least one school year. We also need board members and a webmaster.
