Are you interested in ethical volunteering opportunities in Tanzania? If so, The Small Things (TST) is the place for you! TST is a US-based NGO working on the ground in northern Tanzania. We integrate a comprehensive family preservation program with high-quality, loving, community-based residential care. That means keeping children in homes where they belong, caring for them when their families can’t, and doing all that we can to reunify children in our care with relatives. We are also managing the Families and Futures Coalition of Tanzania (FFCT)- a coalition of organisations working together in order to help grassroots organisations improve their quality of care and move toward family-first models.
TST invites interested volunteers from all over the world to come and see our impact first-hand. We work closely with the local community to create high-impact, ethical volunteer opportunities for those interested in affecting sustainable and long-lasting change. In order to best support the attachment needs of our children, volunteers must commit to a minimum of two months to be considered for this program. Please note that in order to preserve healthy attachments, in most cases, contact with our residential children will be limited.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- working with students and teachers in a capacity-building role at our TST preschool, and/or our partner school.
- assisting our development team in fundraising and communications
- working in the after-school enrichment program and community education classes
If you have a specific area of expertise or interest, please get in touch as we may be able to customize a volunteer role to suit your expertise.
Our volunteers contribute $1,000/month or 300$/week for their accommodation, We will support your fundraising efforts, so check us out at www.thesmallthings.org or email mariam@thesmallthings.org if you have any questions!

Mission Statement
We focus on keeping children in families wherever possible, and providing loving care for them in small family-style homes, only when absolutely necessary.
Description
The Small Things is the culmination of decades of dedication from a number of hardworking women. It all began with Martha Ayo (known as Mama Pendo, or Mama Love), who has been caring for orphaned children in the Nkoaranga community for over 30 years. In 2010, Bekka Ross Russell founded The Small Things, to realize their shared vision of comprehensive, holistic support to keep families together and return children from care when possible, and family-style homes for children who cannot be reunified. Since 2015, Rehema Mussa has served as managing director, fulfilling our goal of having all programs managed and led by Tanzanian staff.
