Do you enjoy working with kids? Is reading a hobby of yours? If so, you'll enjoy volunteering as a reading buddy! Learning Club's in-school reading program makes reading enticing and fun to emerging readers.

During the school day, you'll read with three children for 25 minutes each. Expect to read with first, second, and third graders. The children are budding readers who need just a little extra encouragement and support. They love working with their reading buddy and teachers are grateful for your help! No prior education experience is necessary.

This is a short term commitment that can turn into a long term opportunity for those interested in a long term commitment. Sign up today to inspire children to become lifelong readers!

These are the sites where we need help. Most volunteers pick 1 site to visit every week that school is in session.

About Learning Club KCK

Location:

2203 Parallel Ave, Kansas City, KS 66104, US

Mission Statement

We will provide a positive, pivotal educational experience for the children in Kansas City who need it most.

Description

In 2002, Brad Grabs founded Learning Club after realizing the need for accessible after-school programs in the Kansas City urban core. The Learning Club began as after-school tutoring sessions for students residing in public housing projects and has grown to become a leader in championing child literacy. We partner with the public housing communities to engage children in learning opportunities. The students we serve vary in age, gender, and culture, with many bilingual students and refugee students. Each school year, Learning Club students receive snacks and one-on-one tutoring from our volunteers for an hour after school. In addition to our tutoring program, we provide many enrichment experiences for students. This summer, Learning Club hosted a six week summer camp. Students took field trips to Sporting KC, Science City and many others in addition to rehearsing a scene from Godspell and learning about the Olympics!

Learning Club strives to make learning fun and desirable to underserved students. Our goal is to encourage a love of reading in students while ensuring that every student can confidently say that a Learning Club adult cares about them.
