Since A Turning Point Academy expanded into the Platte County Detention Center we have had amazing success! Being a Tutor with our Academy program means that you love to help! Our Academy program helps adults get their High School Diploma. It is an alternative program to the High-set and GED where a diploma is the end result. Unlike other programs in the Kansas City area, this one is of no cost to the students. No educational background required to be a tutor but we do require an encouraging demeanor and willingness to help. Platte county requires a background check and PREA training before being able to signup to be a tutor in the Detention Center. Age restrictions also apply due to sensitive nature of this volunteer opportunity. We would recommend that you come and sit in on a regular Academy session and see if it's for you, ask all the questions you'd like, and stay for the company!

Regular Academy hours are Tuesday 5pm-7pm, Wednesday 10am-2pm, 5pm-7pm, Thursday 10am-2pm
ATP Academy is located at 1900 NE Englewood Rd, Gladstone, MO 64118
Detention Center hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursday 1pm-3pm

About A Turning Point

Location:

1900 NE Englewood Rd, Gladstone, MO 64118, US

Mission Statement

To support families by providing basic needs & education equipping them for self-sufficiency.

Description

A Turning Point is dedicated to breaking down barriers. We serve the entire metro area without limitations based on geographical area, socioeconomic factors, or any other characteristics. No matter who comes to our door presenting with a need, we will serve them. We have many opportunities for folks to join with us in service to others who need it. Our highlighted programs include the Food Pantry, the Wardrobe or clothing closet, the Academy built for adults to earn their high school diploma, and our Guesthouse which opened in February of 2021 to serve those in need of a shower, a hot meal, internet access and some resources. The Meeting to aid those struggling with any situation and needing social supports and our community meals have been put on pause until we can dine together responsibly. Our volunteers are the heart beat of A Turning Point. Beyond the programs listed, we like to help our volunteers serve in a way that feels meaningful to them. Like to work on lawns? Sort clothes? Help when clients are present? Any or all of the above and more? We're open to ideas and new ways of service, too! Our volunteers are the light that keeps us going, doing what we do and we'd love for you to be a part of that!
