ORGANIZATION: Saavi Services for the Blind

Saavi Services for the Blind is in need of a Landscaper at our Tucson, AZ campus!

Our volunteers provide us with the organizational capacity to continue working towards our vision: A world where blind individuals are equal contributors locally, nationally and throughout the world, demonstrating it is not what you can see; it is what you can do.

Saavi Services for the Blind is a blindness rehabilitation training center providing skills training in nonvisual techniques to people of all ages.

Whether a student is new to blindness or has received training in the past and would like to learn new skills, our goal is to provide skills training so our students may lead productive, independent lives. Our programs serve individuals of all ages, from children to seniors, all with the goal of providing confidence and skill-building opportunities through training and education.

How you’ll help us:

Saavi is moving to a new building, and we need landscaping volunteers to help us create a welcoming, useful, and accessible outdoor space for our students to train in. These spaces will be utilized by students, staff, and community for years to come. Our ideal volunteer can give 10 hours a week to:

  • Provide insight on plant selections and other outdoor design elements
  • Perform regular ground maintenance duties such as trimming, planting, watering, and weeding
  • Use and operate a variety of tools, mechanical equipment, and machinery
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility and safety standards in all areas

Sometimes it is hard to believe in the effectiveness of nonvisual skills if you have never observed them in action. For this reason, we believe that role modeling is a key part of our training program. Thus, all employees and volunteers go through basic immersion training. This training allows staff to not only gain nonvisual skills but also to gain a deeper understanding of a positive philosophy of blindness.
