ORGANIZATION: FRIENDS OF THE PENFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY

Image_202202070435

"Scrapbooking" conjures up elaborate photo albums with bright paper and clever stickers galore. Not so when you help build an archive of the library’s activities, services, and projects for future researchers. This task takes the terms "cut" and "paste" back to their traditional meanings. The Assistant photocopies and clips articles from the local press to help document the library’s programs for the staff and local history buffs. Help maintain this scrapbook collection that spans four decades! If you do well as an independent volunteer, this opportunity is made for you!

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Friends of the Penfield Public Library is to maintain a community-wide association of persons interested in books and libraries, to promote information regarding the library, and to stimulate increased awareness, volunteer service, and use of the library. The Friends create public support for the realization of future needs and facilities of the library outside the scope of the library’s operating budget, providing extras to enhance the patrons’ experiences. The Friends financially sponsor programs designed to add to the cultural life of the community.

Description

The Penfield Public Library is located in a renovated school, serving the informational, cultural, and recreational needs of 36,000 residents which includes 4,500 students in grades K through 12 in six schools in the Penfield Central School District. The library provides a collection of more than 188,000 items, along with technology, programs, and gathering spaces to meet informal learning needs of patrons of all ages. Patrons borrowed over 305,000 items in 2020.

The staff strives to provide library services in a fiscally responsible manner, on a free and equal basis and in an atmosphere of friendly, responsive customer service. In providing these services, the Penfield Public Library is a viable force promoting individual and community growth.

For more than 40 years, the library has been supported by the Friends of the Penfield Public Library (FPPL). Founded in 1977, the Friends support quality library service through fundraising, volunteerism, and advocacy. This membership organization has annually provided extra funds to underwrite programs for all ages and financial assistance to cover extras not included in the library’s budget. The Friends always welcome new members. We also are looking for advocates to educate our elected officials about all the library has to offer.
