ORGANIZATION: The Valedictorian Project

Being a part of TVP means you will be paired with two mentors, a peer and senior mentor. As a part of our in-depth matching process, TVP takes into consideration professional aspirations, personal interests , and academic focuses to ensure your mentors are able to provide the right support throughout your postsecondary journey.

  • Peer Mentors: Individuals who have been in the workforce for a few years, are completing their college education, or recently graduated. Their goal is to provide mentees with guidance as they enter college or begin their careers.
  • Senior Mentors: Individuals who have been working in established careers for some time. Their goal is to provide mentees with guidance and support as they consider long-term professional goals and plans.
Mentors serve as a sounding board and provide guidance based on their own experiences. Mentors utilize strong active listening skills, empathy, and work to meet their mentee where they are. TVP mentors are consistent and remain committed to building a trusting relationship with their mentee. In order to ensure mentors build strong relationships, mentors are held to the following expectations:
  • Mentor-Mentee Meetings: mentors are expected to connect with their mentee at least once a month, and are encouraged to build a relationship with their co-mentor.
  • TVP Mentor Training Suite: mentors receive training on relationship building, anti-racism, situational support, and career coaching. TVP hosts mentor workshops and training events, which mentors are strongly encouraged to attend.
  • Evaluation: mentors engage in quarterly data collection through surveys and check-ins with TVP team members.

Mentors undergo a thorough application, interview, and onboarding process. Mentors and mentees are matched on a variety of factors, such as career field, personal interests, and background.

Mission Statement

TVP’s mentoring relationships break down barriers to equity and close the education-to-employment gap for high-achieving students from urban schools. We recruit and train mentors who are passionate change-makers and committed to a more just future.

Description

The Valedictorian Project (TVP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides mentorship and career development programming to high-achieving graduates from urban high schools. TVP’s unique dual-mentor model matches each mentee with a peer and senior mentor who provide support and guidance through the post-secondary journey.

TVP's program supports historically underrepresented groups. The TVP team has developed and tailored resources and trainings to best meet the needs of mentees, including resources for those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and first-generation college students. The 2021 mentee class includes students from Boston Public Schools, Boston Charter Schools, and Lawrence Public Schools.
