Clean clothing is a basic human need, not a luxury. At the YSHC, we do have an on-site laundry facility; however, many of our folks, because of transportation or financial barriers, are unable to supply the quarters needed for a load of laundry. We are grateful for the community support we have received in regards to laundry supplies, providing us with ample laundry pods and dryer sheets for laundry kits; however, many folks are unable to use these supplies due to not having the quarters needed for a wash and a dry. One load of laundry is equal to eleven quarters and our dream is that each residents will have access to a laundry kit (eleven quarters, a laundry pod and a dryer sheet) when in need. Would you consider holding a spare change drive at your work, with your friends and neighbors, or reaching out to your children’s sports team or school?

Spare change and all other donations can be dropped off anytime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday or between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. We are located at 2 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309. Please contact Brooke at brooke.heldt@dmymca.org if you have any questions!

About YMCA Supportive Housing Campus

2 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, IA 50309, US

Mission Statement

Y Supportive Housing is a community solution to help eliminate homelessness by providing Hope, Dignity, and Support in the form of permanent supportive housing. This Housing First Model helps people who are homeless (or who are at-risk of homelessness) move into stable and secure permanent housing supplemented by supportive services. Case management, transportation assistance, food/clothing/hygiene pantries, rental assistance, and other services help people meet their basic needs and reach their life goals. The campus provides a place to call home for 140 men and women. The constant wait list demonstrates the need for affordable housing in the community.

Our belief that everyone is worthy to live a life of meaning guides everything we do; YOU make a difference in the lives of so many by supporting us in this important work!

We provide a place to call home for 140 men and women who are transitioning out of homelessness and into a life of safety and stability. When asking our residents what home at the YSHC means to them, this is what they shared...

"A place that I am safe and comfortable. The YSHC provides that for me. No one being able to just walk in makes me feel safe from the demons in my past. Controlling my own heat and air is very comforting." - Mary, a resident of the YSHC

"A home to me means that it’s the most peaceful and safe place to live. It is something I have lost before because of the choices I made. I believe that’s why I have an appreciation for the home I have at the YSHC. I would also like to say thank you to all the staff and volunteers. It means a great deal that people care and want you to succeed. I can say I have a home and a village all under the same roof." - Kent, a resident of the YSHC

Volunteers are essential to ensuring that we are able to carry out our mission to provide hope, dignity and support to those who call the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus their home. With so many different ways to volunteer... you can start making a difference today!
