Keeping Vigil with Patients at The Bedside - Windham

ORGANIZATION: Brookhaven Hospice

  • 6 people are interested

Brookhaven Hospice is looking for dedicated and compassionate Vigil Volunteers to be with patients and families during the dying process. A Vigil Volunteer is a presence, compassionate listener, bringer of rituals, still and quiet. They are an invited guest into a most sacred and personal transition. They understand that this transition is physical and spiritual and that each situation or vigil is unique. Vigil Volunteers go to patients when the time of death is near. Their primary concern is the comfort of the patient.

Vigil Volunteers are a highly valued and vital part of our organization. You can use your gifts to impact someone in their last stage of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and supported.

Vigil Volunteers will typically work in the background, nurturing as needed. The dying patient may or may not know the Vigil Volunteer is there...and yet...there he/she is...a constant observer, someone to comfort, to calm and to care. Vigil Volunteering is a beautiful experience. You don’t have to do or be anything special... just be there. Embrace your compassionate self and know that this is always our patient’s journey into death, but it is also your journey in experience.

Mission Statement

Brookhaven Hospice provides patients and families with exceptional hospice care, and facilitates a meaningful end of life experience. With deep compassion and skill, we care for people living with serious illnesses, the dying and those who care for them.

Description

Hospice is a passion - we are driven to provide compassionate, responsible, and timely hospice services, always leading with dignity. Brookhaven Hospice was founded by a group of nursing home owners and operators to provide additional, specialized end-of-life resources to the residents residing in their facilities. Over time Brookhaven expanded to serve other facilities and the community at large.
Our butterfly logo symbolizes the need to accept the dramatic changes that affect our lives - to not only accept but also embrace the natural evolution of our bodies. Their transformation reminds us of the work we do on this earth, the preparation we undergo and the eventual transformation of our own spirit and soul. Brookhaven’s butterfly beckons us to keep our faith through the natural transitions in our lives - the need to recognize life’s patterns and prepare for the stages that affect us all.
